Transportation Management Associations

TMAs

Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) are private, non-profit, member-controlled organizations established to work with employers and governments to help provide more effective and efficient commuting and other transportation options in suburban environments (e.g., commercial districts, malls, industrial parks, etc.). They also frequently work in support of Smart Growth initiatives aimed at promoting efficient land-use patterns.

TMA activities that serve to reduce traffic congestion include working with employers to employ flex-time and setting up telecommuting and compressed work schedule pilot projects. They also set up shuttle services and promote alternative modes of transportation, such as walking and bicycling. The TMAs provide information on available public transit and other local transportation services. They also assist with the development of Emergency Ride Home programs, and they generate rideshare matchlists to potential carpoolers and vanpoolers.

New Jersey’s TMAs are supported with federal funds designated for congestion management and air quality concerns. As the region’s MPO, the NJTPA assists the New Jersey Department of Transportation by providing oversight services for its TMA program. It also provides the TMAs with transportation planning assistance. The NJTPA region is home to eight TMAs – all important stakeholders in the MPO’s various planning activities.
