Description:
Essex County is home to Newark, the county seat, and one of the industrial and financial centers of the state and the entire Northeast. The county possesses a wide range of transportation facilities, from Port Newark to Newark International Airport to extensive commuter rail service. The county is a hub for major national and international transportation, providing freight service by trucks and rail. There is local and national passenger rail service and easy access to the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.
The western part of the county offers pleasant residential communities and a variety of travel options. More than half of the county's land is used for residential purposes, while approximately 30 percent is devoted to forest and public lands. While switching to a service-oriented economy from a manufacturing base, county businesses can rely on a skilled and accomplished labor force, commuters depend on an excellent transportation system and both benefit by the central location. Several corporate headquarters, including PSE&G and Prudential, are located in the county.
