Rutgers Graduate Planning Studio Climate
Change and Planning Project

Rutgers graduate students at the Bloustein School for Planning and Public Policy recently completed their Fall 2009 Graduate Transportation Studio, which was designed to assist the NJTPA and the Climate Change Working Group as they address climate change at the NJTPA and throughout the region.  Transportation is one of the largest contributors to climate changing greenhouse gases (GHGs) and the region's transportation system faces significant impacts from anticipated changes in climate and weather patterns.  The NJTPA is among a growing number of MPOs that are thinking proactively about climate change.

In this report, Climate Change Concerns and Planning Practice: Recommendations for the NJTPA, the studio class worked to address the impact of climate change on the transportation planning activities of the NJTPA, as well as to provide some suggestions on how to address these impacts. To do this, the studio class explored the topic from a number of directions and presented a variety of suggestions for the NJTPA to consider in its transportation planning work for the region.  By considering how NJTPA’s planning practices and products could better address climate change, studio participants engaged two sides of the climate change issue for the transportation sector, exploring both mitigation of GHG production and adaptation to anticipated environmental changes.

The recommendations of this report will be considered by the Climate Change Working Group.
