NJTPA Region General Aviation

The NJTPA has completed a study of general aviation airports in the region, with the goal of supporting their continued operation through addressing road access issues. The study report, including maps and descriptions of the region's airports, is below.

General Aviation Airports play an increasingly important role in the NJTPA region. The region is home to one scheduled service airport (Newark-Liberty International Airport) and 24 general aviation airports. The term "general aviation" (GA) encompasses all aircraft operations other than scheduled airline or military flights. This includes both private and commercial flights ranging from single propeller craft to corporate jets, helicopters, gliders, balloons, seaplanes, and experimental aircraft. GA airports serve local corporate businesses and the recreational flyer alike.

The state’s airports provide a base for business and recreational travel, emergency services, law enforcement, firefighting, agricultural use and flight training. It is estimated that some 55,000 New Jersey businesses (more than 25 percent of all state establishments) in the manufacturing, transportation, finance and insurance, and technical service sectors are potential users of aviation services.

Area airports could also play a key role in incident management, such as their use by first responders for staging and delivery of medical and relief supplies to our mega-populated cities in the event of a national or local emergency.

The Report of the New Jersey General Aviation Study Commission from the late 1990s indicated that 70,000 New Jersey jobs were directly related to general aviation. New Jersey airports are used by the state’s 15,000 resident licensed pilots.

Despite the halving of the number of New Jersey’s GA airports following World War II, the number of aircraft has remained relatively steady over the same period. Aircraft with basic capabilities are being replaced with quieter, more capable and complex aircraft, with incrementally more range and capacity.
